What Is Endodontic Retreatment?
In some cases, a tooth that has already undergone a root canal treatment may not fully heal as expected. If the tooth continues to cause discomfort, swelling, or infection, endodontic retreatment may be necessary. Also called root canal retreatment, this procedure is designed to address issues left behind from the original root canal treatment, such as persistent infection, hidden cracks, or an improper seal on the root. During root canal retreatment at Silberman Endodontics, Drs. Jaime Silberman and Lawrence Posner carefully remove the original filling material before cleaning the tooth and sealing it off again to restore it to full function. Using advanced techniques and a gentle touch, our team can provide a second chance for your tooth after a root canal retreatment. How Does Root Canal Retreatment Work?
Root canal retreatment is performed at our Boynton Beach, FL office using local anesthetic and gentle cleaning techniques to minimize discomfort. We'll begin by evaluating your tooth with digital imaging tools to assess the damage and the likely cause of failure. If retreatment is recommended, we'll numb the area and carefully reopen the tooth to access the filling inside the root canal. Using irrigation and ultrasonic tools, we'll remove the filling material and clean the inside of the tooth to remove infection. If the canals are unusually complex or damaged, we may place medication inside the tooth and schedule a second visit to complete the procedure. When the tooth is ready, we fill the root canals again with a new sealing material and close the tooth with a temporary or permanent filling. In many cases, the tooth will need a new crown or updated restoration to protect it and prevent reinfection in the future.
While endodontic retreatment can be more complicated and time-consuming than a standard root canal, it's largely a comfortable experience for most patients, and many individuals feel much better once the dental infection is removed.
What Are the Benefits of Endodontic Retreatment?
While root canals are highly effective, there are cases where additional treatment is needed to fully resolve the problem. Endodontic retreatment gives the tooth a second chance to heal properly. This process allows our team at Silberman Endodontics to correct leftover issues from the initial treatment to create better conditions for long-term success, providing benefits that include:
- Removes lingering or recurring infection
- Helps preserve the natural tooth
- Avoids the need for extraction or implant
- Supports better long-term function
- Restores comfort and reduces inflammation
