What Is a Dental Infection?
A dental infection occurs when bacteria enter the tooth or surrounding tissues, often as a result of deep decay, untreated damage, or a failed restoration. Once inside, the infection can spread into the pulp, through the root canal system, and into the jawbone or nearby soft tissues. While early symptoms may start small, like a lingering toothache or mild swelling, untreated dental infections can progress quickly and become serious, affecting not only your oral health but your overall well-being. At Silberman Endodontics in Boynton Beach, FL, Drs. Jaime Silberman and Lawrence Posner use advanced diagnostics and imaging to detect the signs of infection early and provide care that protects your health and preserves your natural teeth whenever possible. Our goal is not only to relieve your symptoms but to stop the infection from spreading and help the tooth heal in a stable, healthy environment.
How Do You Treat a Tooth Infection?
We'll begin by evaluating your symptoms and using diagnostic imaging to confirm whether an infection is present. Common signs of a serious dental infection include persistent pain, sensitivity to heat or pressure, swelling in the gums or face, or a small pimple-like bump near the affected tooth. Once we've identified the source of the infection, we'll numb the area and create a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialized tools, Dr. Silberman or Dr. Posner will carefully remove the pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and disinfect the internal space to eliminate bacteria. After the canals have been sealed with a biocompatible filling material, we'll place a temporary or permanent restoration to protect the tooth. In some cases, additional steps — such as drainage of an abscess or follow-up medication — may be needed to fully resolve the infection. Most root canal treatments for infected teeth are completed in one or two visits, with minimal recovery time and a strong long-term success rate.
What Are the Benefits of Treating a Dental Infection?
Infections can spread quickly if ignored, and even a small delay in treatment can lead to more complex problems and intensive treatments in the future. That's why it's so important to address a tooth infection quickly and thoroughly. The benefits of treatment for dental infection at Silberman Endodontics include:
- Eliminates infection at the source
- Relieves pain, pressure, and swelling

Excellent, excellent doctor and staff Reassuring and easy to understand definitely a number one rated Dr,and front desk Staff
I was in a lot of pain and my dentist told me I needed an emergency procedure. Dr. Posner at Silberman Endodontics was able to diagnose and do the root canal on the same day. He was kind and thorough in his explanations. I was very happy with the outcome and grateful he could save the tooth. My only advice is to double check with the front desk that they take your insurance. I had to follow up to confirm that it went through.
Sharon and staff are always courteous and on time! Dr. Silberman is very nice and great at what he does as well. A thumbs up overall.
