What Is Apexogenesis?
When a young permanent tooth is injured but still has living pulp inside, our goal at Silberman Endodontics is to keep that tissue healthy enough to allow the root to continue developing. Apexogenesis is a conservative form of pulpotomy, a specialized endodontic procedure that helps by protecting the remaining healthy pulp so the root can keep growing and naturally close at the tip. This gives the tooth a stronger, more stable foundation for long-term health. By removing only the damaged portion of the pulp and placing a healing material over the healthy tissue that remains, Drs. Jaime Silberman and Lawrence Posner give the root a chance to keep growing and close naturally at the tip. This approach helps preserve the tooth's strength, stability, and long-term function without moving straight to a full root canal or extraction. Learn more about the benefits of apexogenesis and whether or not this treatment is right for your child's smile by scheduling a consultation with our endodontists in Boynton Beach, FL today.
How Is Apexogenesis Performed?
An apexogenesis procedure typically takes place in stages to ensure proper development of the tooth root. First, we'll take detailed images of the tooth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) or our office's intraoral dental scanner. Depending on the condition of the tooth, we may recommend apexogenesis (if a fair amount of healthy tissue remains) or apexification (if the inner pulp is dead). After numbing the tooth, we'll carefully remove the damaged tissue while leaving any remaining pulp intact. To help the pulp heal and develop, we'll place a medicated material directly over it before sealing it off with a protective filling. If needed, we'll schedule follow-up apexogenesis treatments at our Boynton Beach, FL office to monitor progress and confirm that the root is growing properly. If all goes well, the tooth will develop as it should, and we'll plan for a permanent restoration once growth is complete.
What Are the Benefits of Apexogenesis?
When the pulp can be protected and the root allowed to keep growing, the long-term outlook for the tooth changes significantly. The risk of complications goes down, the chances of preserving normal function go up, and the need for future treatment becomes less likely. Apexogenesis offers a range of benefits for patients and families in Boynton Beach, FL, including:
- Helps the root grow to its full length and strength
- Preserves the tooth's natural vitality and structure
- Avoids early root canal treatment in young patients
- Supports normal bite alignment and jaw development
- Reduces the risk of long-term complications or retreatment
- Encourages natural healing after trauma or decay
