What Is Apexification?
When a young permanent tooth is injured or infected before it's fully developed, traditional root canal treatment may not be possible right away. That's because the root tip, or apex, hasn't closed yet — and without that closure, the root canal can't be properly sealed. Apexification at Silberman Endodontics is a specialized procedure that encourages the root to form a hard barrier at the tip, giving the tooth a better chance of long-term health and stability. Drs. Jaime Silberman and Lawrence Posner use apexification treatment to stop infection and support healing in immature teeth with damaged or dead pulp (often following an injury). By placing a biocompatible material inside the root canal, we can create the conditions needed for the body to form a calcified barrier at the root tip. This allows us to seal the canal and preserve the natural tooth, even in cases where normal root development has stopped. If your child has a permanent tooth that is showing signs of infection, we urge you to schedule a consultation and exam at our endodontic practice in Boynton Beach, FL to learn how we can help preserve their natural smile.
How Does an Apexification Treatment Work?
Your child's apexification procedure will take place in several steps and may require one or multiple visits to our Boynton Beach, FL practice. The process begins with a careful evaluation and digital imaging to confirm that the root is underdeveloped and to check for infection. If there is still some healthy inner pulp, we may instead recommend apexogenesis, a similar treatment aimed at preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. After examining the tooth, we'll gently clean out the root canal and disinfect the area to remove bacteria and inflamed tissue. At that point, we'll apply a biocompatible material to the root canal, which will encourage the body to form a hard, calcified barrier at the tip. Depending on how the tooth responds, we may schedule follow-up apexification appointments to ensure the root is properly sealed. Once a solid barrier has formed, we'll complete the apexification treatment with a permanent filling and discuss dental restorations to maintain the tooth's strength and function.
What Are the Benefits of Apexification?
Apexification encourages the root to close naturally, helping to preserve the tooth's function and appearance and giving it a stronger foundation for future care. We prefer apexification whenever possible at Silberman Endodontics because it offers a predictable way to save a still-developing tooth that might otherwise be lost. The benefits of apexification for your child include:
- Saves teeth with undeveloped roots that would otherwise be lost
- Stimulates natural healing at the root tip
- Reduces the risk of reinfection or structural damage
- Creates the conditions needed for successful root canal filling
- Preserves bite alignment and long-term oral health
- Allows for future restoration with a crown if needed

Arriving on time and discussing any questions beforehand can help your visit go smoothly.
Can apexification save an immature permanent tooth?
In many cases, apexification is recommended to help save an immature permanent tooth with a damaged or infected pulp by encouraging closure of the root tip. Preserving the natural tooth is often the primary goal of this specialized endodontic treatment.
How long does an apexification procedure usually take?
The length of an apexification procedure depends on the condition of the tooth and the stage of root development, but most appointments can be completed within a typical endodontic visit. Some cases may require follow-up appointments to monitor healing before the tooth is permanently restored.
