What Is a Traumatic Dental Injury?
Dental trauma is different from everyday dental problems. Traumatic dental injuries happen suddenly, often from an accident, a sports injury, or a direct impact to the face. The most common type of dental trauma we treat at Silberman Endodontics is a chipped or fractured tooth, but injuries can also include deep cracks or even an avulsed (knocked-out) tooth. Sometimes, the damage is obvious; other times, it's hidden beneath the surface, affecting the root, the pulp, or the supporting bone. Even a tooth that looks intact may be at risk if the injury affects the blood supply or causes microscopic cracks. Drs. Jaime Silberman and Lawrence Posner treat dental injuries with a focus on careful evaluation and custom-tailored care that reflects the complexity of each injury, empowering patients to heal and move forward with a healthier smile. Our goal is to preserve the natural tooth whenever possible by treating or preventing pulp damage, restoring stability, and supporting long-term healing. If you've suffered a dental accident — even if the damage seems minor — we urge you to schedule a consultation and exam at our endodontic practice in Boynton Beach, FL as soon as possible to be evaluated for signs of dental trauma.
How Do You Treat Traumatic Dental Injuries?
We'll begin by performing a detailed clinical exam and taking imaging to assess the full extent of the injury. The type of treatment depends on the location and severity of the trauma. Minor chips or cracks may only need smoothing or restoration. If the pulp is exposed or the tooth is fractured more deeply, we may recommend root canal therapy to remove damaged tissue and prevent infection. If the tooth has been displaced, we will gently reposition it and stabilize it using a small splint that stays in place for a short period while the bone and ligaments heal. In cases where the tooth has been fully knocked out (avulsion), we'll assess whether it can be reimplanted, then perform root canal treatment at the appropriate time to preserve the tooth.
After treatment, we'll monitor the tooth closely over the coming weeks or months. Some dental injuries heal quickly and predictably, while others require long-term follow-up to ensure the root remains healthy and the bone surrounding the tooth stabilizes as expected.
