Conventional Root Canal Treatment

• Inside the tooth there is a connective soft tissue called the pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerves. This tissue can become infected or injured from tooth decay, cracks, periodontal disease or other conditions and thus unable to repair itself.

Non-Surgical Endodontic Retreatment

Occasionally after Root Canal Treatment the lesion may persist and do not heal. This could be related to:

• Untreated canals associated with a complicated tooth anatomy.
• Contamination of the root canal treatment by saliva or recurrent caries.
• Questionable instrumentation and filling of the root canal system.
• Damaged root surfaces. (e.g. perforations).

Under these circumstances Endodontic Retreatment could bethe alternative therapy:

During the retreatment the endodontist will reopen the tooth, remove the tooth filling (or the permanent post-core and crown) and gain access to the contaminated canals. Then, the root canal filling will be removed, and the canals are re-cleaned and shaped. After disinfecting the canals, in certain situations your endodontist will recommend the placement of an intracanal medication; usually for one or two weeks before filling the canals again.

If a perforation is present in the tooth it will be repaired during the treatment.
After the procedure is completed you will need to return to your dentist as soon as possible to have a new permanent restoration.

Endodontic Microsurgery – Apicoectomy

In a few cases, it is seen that non-surgical endodontic treatments (Conventional Root Canal Treatments or Retreatments) don’t heal.

This may be attributed to multiple factors such as:

• Foreign body reactions.
• Extra-radicular infections.
